Production
Two
types of tea namely ASSAM TYPE ( Camellia assamica ) and China type
(Cammelia Sinensis ) are grown in Myanmar and the total cultivated
tea area is 74143 ha. Out of this Assam type occupies 70401 ha and
China type 2164 ha. The Organization of Japanes N.G.O has introduced
Oo Lon tea tested in 287 arcas and foreign Market. The expansion
of Oo Lon tea cultivated area is carried out. Chinese type is best
for green tea and can be produced for export. Assam type is good
only for local consumption and little can be exported. There is
no need to use fertilizer and insecticide for tea cultivation in
Myanmar.
Organic Farming, is important considering the demand for fresh clean
and green food is rapidly growing in many developed country markets.
Therefore, it can be considered for producing Organic Tea and high
quality for marketing.
Tea production in Myanmar are in the hilly regions of Shan State,
Kachin, Chin, Kayin, Sagaing and Mandalay Divisions.
Shan State is the main tea growing area with a total sowed area
of about 67616 ha. Followed by Sagaing Division having about 2973
ha.

Green tea leaves produce 69.5% Green tea, 19.5%
Black tea, 20% Pickled tea. Total consumption is Green tea 52%,
Black tea 31%, Pickled tea 17%. In 2002-2003 out of the total production,
8003 MT of Green tea, 4224 MT of Black tea and 9932 MT of Pickled
tea were consumed and marketed in Myanmar. The percent of consumption
for a person is about 0.41 Kg per year.
For local consumption two large Black tea processing factories owned
by the State and some small scales prived factories are situated
at Nam San and Tan Daung. The market channel of tea from producers
to consumers is being carried out by farmers, brokers and traders
for the private sector.
